“It is a huge honor to be named the 2022 Kat Muscat Scholar, and I continue to thank the Kat Muscat Custody Committee, the Muscat family and Express Media,” said Ahmed. “Support from the scholarship will be essential to my growth as a young writer and allow me to seek resources for professional development.”

Ahmed will use the grant to work on a hybrid manuscript exploring “how the myth of martyrdom intersects with motherhood and youth, and the ways in which language and voice can be tools to challenge subjugation.”

“In an incredibly high year of scholarship applications, we were immediately captivated by Munira’s project, a hybrid manuscript exploring language, power, myth and community through the worldview of Bangladeshi women” said Kat Muscat Custody Committee Chairwoman Veronica Sullivan. “It’s rare to meet a young writer with such a dazzlingly original and fully developed voice and artistry, and we can’t wait for readers to be moved, challenged and captivated by her work.”

Now in its seventh year, the Kat Muscat Scholarship is named in honor of the late Voiceworks editor. The recipient is selected by The Kat Muscat Legacy Projects Custody Committee, which includes members of the Express Media Board and staff, the Muscat family and named community members.
