Bengal SSC scam: Partha Chatterjee spends her first day in jail reading books, with 4 covers

Former West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee spent his first day in jail reading books for several hours, sources told India Today. The former heavyweight Trinamool Congressman (TMC) minister received four blankets inside the jail on Friday night, as did common law prisoners, sources said.

A special court in Kolkata on Friday sent former West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee and his aide Arpita Mukherjee to 14 days in police custody in the Service Commission appointments scam case.

Partha Chatterjee is housed in the ‘Poila Baish’ block of the Presidency Reformatory in Kolkata, sources told India Today. Partha Chatterjee was brought to the Presidency Reformatory in a van from Bankshall Magistrates Court on Friday evening.

“Partha Chatterjee was detained inside the prison like other common prisoners. He is not given any special facilities inside the prison. He was given four blankets inside the prison Friday night. He was also served roti, dal and vegetables for dinner. Since he was tired due to stress, he fell asleep early,” sources told India Today.

According to sources, there are a total of 22 cells in this block and the former TMC minister is currently housed in cell number 2.

“Partha Chatterjee was given unsweetened tea and biscuits on Saturday morning. The minister was given rice, dal and vegetables for lunch at 12:30 today. He was not given any special status and also uses the toilet common inside the prison,” the sources added.

Additional guards have been deployed inside the prison for his security and to monitor the situation. Sarada Group chairman Sudipta Sen, accused in the chit fund case, TMC chief Chatradhar Mahato arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), and Aftab Ansari, an accused involved in the attack on the center American are housed in other cells of the same block.

Partha Chatterjee was relieved of his ministerial duties by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while the party removed him from all posts he held in the party. The ED claimed to have recovered Rs 49.8 crore in cash, a huge amount of jewelry and gold bars from the houses of Chatterjee’s aide, Arpita Mukherjee.
