Local Favorites

The twig bookstore and bookstore out of nowhere were two of the many suggestions I received when I asked which bookstores to visit in San Antonio. Talking to their booksellers, I learned that the stores are proud to celebrate San Antonio authors.

June’s top three The Twig books were Always faithful by John C. Kerr, Miraflores by Anne Elise Urrutia, and San Antonio: A Photographic Journey by Rob Greebon, Mike Jones and Cynthia Leal Massey.

Always faithful details a love story set against the backdrop of the Pacific Theater of World War II. Published by TCU Press, this is the sixth novel by Kerr, a 40-year-old San Antonio native.

Miraflores, published by Trinity Press, follows the life of Mexican physician Aureliano Urrutia who built the Miraflores Garden after immigrating to Texas during the Mexican Revolution. The book details the early stages of the garden in 1921 to its modern setting in Brackenridge Park.

San Antonio: A Photographic Journey shares over 100 colorful photographs of Alamo city parks, missions, architecture and other special sites by photographers Rob Greebon and Mike Jones.

The Twig also highlighted the center of San Antonio Forget the Alamo by Bryan Burrough, Chris Tomlinson and Jason Stanford, and Hayao Miyazaki by Jessica Niebel among her best-selling books.

Nowhere’s three best books were Broken (in the best possible way) by Jenny Lawson, More than you’ll ever know by Katie Gutierrez (originally from San Antonio), and The House of the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune.

Lawson is the owner of Nowhere Books and Brokenher memoir, recounts her struggles with depression, “offering harrowing and hilarious anecdotes” about her “mental and physical health journey”.

More than you’ll ever know Gutierrez’s debut novel features a “gripping mystery and heartbreaking family drama” that “explores the many conflicting demands of marriage and motherhood, and the impossibility of truly knowing anyone.”

The House of the Cerulean Sea is described as “an enchanting love story…about the profound experience of finding an unlikely family in an unexpected place”.
